Backpackers guide to Ecuador (continued)

If you haven’t seen part one, jump back to my guide on Quito! Quito is full of rich culture and history and deserves time to be explored before rushing off to other areas of the country. Once you’ve read it, continue on for my recommended Ecuador itinerary.

1. Visiting the Rainforest

High up on my list would be for anyone to experience a couple of nights in the Ecuadorean cloud and/or rainforest for an unbeatable experience. The views are unreal, with a good guide you’ll learn all about the plants and their medicinal uses and to be honest, I love waking up in the middle of nature. There are tonnes of people selling tours, make sure you do you research ahead of booking for the best experience possible!

2. Baños

If you’ve done your research, you’ve probably heard about baños. It’s a thrill-seekers dream! Here you can find ‘the swing at the end of the world’ (La Casa de árbol) numerous adventure experiences such as (but not limited to):

  • Zip lining
  • Canyoning
  • Waterfall discovery
  • Hot springs
  • Biking

Alongside this, I’d also recommend trying out nightlife as I met the most lovely group of locals who partied all night long with me and took me to all the best spots. I still keep in touch with one of them years later!

3. The Galápagos Islands

Now I didn’t make it to the Galapagos but anyone I met that had been had fallen in love and said nothing but positive reviews. It is expensive but for what you can see and do I personally would see value in spending the money – it’s a once (or twice) in a life time experience.

4. Cuenca

Cuenca was a cool city based in the south. In terms of activities, I didn’t find cuenca to be up there with many but still recommend going for the beautiful streets and buildings. This historic centre is beautiful and there are some great shopping and food spots!

As previously mentioned, I didn’t spend long in Ecuador and there is much more to be explored. This was just scratching the surface of what I’m sure is tonnes more hidden beauty and fun.
