I’m back solo travelling after what feels like forever away! This trip has a bit of a twist, for once, I haven’t quit my job and will continue to work throughout my travels. Due to covid & ongoing restrictions, I’ve finally started to explore more of Europe with my trip starting in Croatia.
With time alone comes a lot of time to think and as I haven’t brought a travel diary with me to write in, everything will be back on here! I keep having thoughts about what I would like to write about so ignoring Croatia travel information and digital nomad life for my first post, let’s go on to language barriers and brits abroad.
I’m so privileged to be able to have English as my first language but I hate the English education system for not pushing people to learn more languages. It blows my mind that you can have a group of 5 people from all over the world and we all converse in English and once I start speaking to them, you get the learn they are actually fluent in at least 3 languages. Then you get to (some not all) brits who can’t speak anything but English!
Something I always see is ‘if you could chose, would you rather speak with animals or every language’ and until this day, I would always speak to animals but after a week in Croatia using English and poor Spanish, I honestly wish I could speak or understand as many languages as possible. A old sweet Croatian man sat next to me on a ferry trip and was trying to talk and tell me about islands (from what I understand from the hand gestures and body language) and I would have loved to be able to speak with him in local language.
I write this as a Brit who is now determined to speak more fluent Spanish & eventually (I’m a slow learner) another language.
What languages do you speak or wish to learn?
